Motorcycle Repair: Kawasaki KZ750 twin horn not working, kawasaki kz750, kz750 twin

Question
I've owned since new a 79 kz750 twin. It is 100% sans mufflers original and everything works as new...until a few months ago the horn quit working. I have disconnected the horn wires and I don't show any voltage getting to the wires when the button is depressed. I have opened the split handlebar switch and no wires are broken, the switch appears to only have a single wire running from it.

Any suggestions on troubleshooting?

Answer
Hi John,

Trace voltage through the circuit. Investigate where voltage stops as the source.

Check and dress button contacts. Corrosion may cause conductivity issues.

Check conductor wire for evidence of dry-rot, fractures, chafing, and other defects.

Check connectors for clean, tightly fastened connections. Applying dielectric grease helps prevent corrosion and water shorting.

Check horn diaphragm plates for evidence of rust, insects, webs, and corrosion.
