Motorcycle Repair: Odometer/trip meter problem, yamaha vstar 1100, gasoline usage

Question
Hi Mark,
Recently I had some LED lights added to my 2003 Yamaha VStar 1100. I went to pick the bike up and noticed that the milage was showing on the odometer.  I always leave it on the trip meter because that's how I keep up with my gasoline usage.  I had to get gas so after I filled up I reset the trip meter and headed on my way.  I had to make another stop after that and noticed when I cranked my bike back up the milage was showing back on the odometer.  I pressed the button to go back to the trip meter and it had zero'ed out.  It does this every time.  My trip meter works perfectly fine until I turn the bike off then I've lost the amount of miles that I have gone.  What do you think this could be?  The person that did the lights doesn't seem to have a any idea of what it could be. Hopefully you can help me. My email is wtjsmith@bellsouth.net.
Thank you for your reply.

Answer
Hi Joyce,

I suspect the LED's circuitry are interrupting the operation of the instruments via the engine control module.

I would need to investigate the problem to accurately diagnose the cause.

Rudimentary test: Disconnect the LED's and note if the LED's are the source of the problem.

I could find no Yamaha Tech Bulletins reference the problem.
