Motorcycle Repair: kawasaki problems, dead as a doornail, blown fuses

Question
Mark,
how's it goin I recently purchased a 1977 kz1000 from a very reputable shop in Ill. My buddy and I were running all over for a couple hours the other day, running great, we stopped for about 5 mins at his ex wifes house, get back on to start the bike up click to run, turn on ignition key push starter button and nuttin, no start, no lights, completely dead tried to 1st gear start
again nuttin tried to jump dead as a doornail. I also noticed during this process that a filter (NOT THE FOUR INLINE) but a single filter was lying down in the engine. Now my buddy's wife is really cool so it sits in her garage. I dont belive the two problems are related and im no mechanic. I have a heavy feeling I should have bought a new bike. Money is not a huge issue. Maybe help restor my faith that I didnt make a mistake and keep me from being screwed by a local shop. I Really appreciate your help.

        THANK YOU! Jeff

Answer
Hi Jeff,

First thing to check are the fuses. Replace any blown fuses. If the problem persists, check battery cable connections. A loose battery cable can cause similar problems.

I suspect the filter is a K&N filter and a bit smaller than the air pods? If so, it belongs on the crankcase vent, located directly below the carbs.

If the problem persists, advise. We'll go from there.
