Motorcycle Repair: set points, point gap, dt175

Question
I have a 1974 dt175 yamaha 2 stroke. How do you set the points?I can get to them no prolem just didnt know if you had to be tdc or anything thanks

Answer
Gary,

First off - if the points are pitted at all, or look in anyway old - start with a fresh set.

Get the correct gap (most likely between .012-.015") from your yamaha dealer.

Now to Install:

Install the new points, pay close attention to any washers and or tubing.  You will need to rotate the iginition by turning your motor over until the highest spot on the cam that holds the points, aligns with the heel of the points.  You may have a scribe mark on the cam to make this easy. This is when you set the point gap... set it, and recheck.  Also, make sure there is no sludge or grease anywhere, clean everything and relube with distributor grease.
