Motorcycle Repair: xr100 forks, triple clamps, clymers

Question
I recently purchased a used set of forks for my sons xr100.  The originals were bent in an crash.  The shipper removed the springs for shipping purposes, however I do not know how to put them back in. I tried to remove the bolt in the top of the forks to no avail.  They are very tight and i thought i may damage them if i tried harder.  Hope you can help!

Answer
Wade,

This cap does need to be removed.  Now assuming the shipper did not cross thread the caps back in do the following.

Leave the forks in the bike to use the triple clamps as holders.  Use a large, long socket wrench.  This sounds obvious but if you don't have a long handle you are not getting the torque you need - go to sears or lhs and find the longest arm they make, it doesn't need the socket end, it can be a fixed socket... they make them quite large - i think around 18" or so.

If this doesn't work, you may want to try an impact driver, like the pitcrews have.  If you don't have access to that and still can not get it off, I suggest bringing it to your local honda dealer, they will surely loosen it for you and most likely not charge you but a tip.

Also! if these forks do not have oil in them they will need to be filled - you will need to consult a service manual, available online (clymers) or from your dealer.

Good Luck!
