Motorcycle Repair: 2003 Harley Dyna starter problem, harley dyna, appretiated

Question
Went a couple of days with the engine turning slower than usual at the start switch. Thought I had low battery. Now I only hear the starter whirl without engaging. What could cause this? If starter do your recommend re-building or replace it? One of your other posts suggested a solenoid issue?

Your thoughts are appretiated.

Answer
Remove the primary clutch inspection cover. Looking above the clutch you will see the jackshaft. When you hit the starter button the jackshast will slide out and engage the clutch hub. Watch the jackshaft and have somebody hot the starter button. If it doenst slide out the you have a solenoid problem. You can remove the starter and have it tested. I would check to see how much it cost to rebuild over the cost of buying a new one.
Good luck and happy riding
