Motorcycle Repair: 2006 ZX10R transmission, metal flake, metal particles

Question
Hi Mark

I recently bought a brnad new Kawasaki ZX10R. I'm still running it in at the moment. A few days ago I did something stupid - while sitting on the bike, with it running in neutral, I accidentally hit the gear lever with my foot. This banged it into first gear and instantly stalled the engine. It didn't grind the gears at all, it went straight home.
I started up again and it has operated fine, however I am paranoid that I may have damaged something inside the transmission. Not knowing exactly how transmissions are built or how tough they are, I was hoping you could shed some light on whether or not I have done any damage?
Kind regards, Phil

Answer
Hi Phil,

That must be a bad feeling, but rest assured that the transmission is very durable.

Inspect the oil on next oil/filter change. Look for excessive or large metal particles. Some particles are normal. The oil may appear fine metal flake- normal.

Image the loads placed on a roadrace or dragrace transmission. Very few racing engines use transmissions that are not stock.

If shifting and transmission seems fine, it probably is. Unless you hear or feel any new noise, vibrations, or other suspicious vibrations, etc... through the pegs, seat, and bars, you're okay.

Get some sleep tonight.

Respectfully,
Mark Shively
