Motorcycle Repair: 97 flhp engine maintenance, top dogs, privledge

Question
Mike:

I'm over in Korea and the cops sell their flhp's on occasion (between 7500 and 8500). I can't say whether they take good care of them. The cops over here are considered to be the top dogs as they must earn the right to cruise; it's a privledge. Ususally Koreans pamper the highly sought items in their society (Benz's, HD's, etc.) so it wouldn't suprise me that the bikes were well kept but, you never know.

I wonder what the normal life of the top end and other 'delicate' engine parts is. A current bike for sale is stated in good condition with 85K (around 50 000 mi. on it) for around $8500.

I know enough to do a compression test with and without a squirt of oil at full throttle, to check for leaks and see if the chrome is well kept (to me, well kept chrome=well maintained bike) but that's the end of my knowledge.

I'd appreciate a quick run-down on the possible large-ticket repairs that would be needed for such a ride.

Thanks for your time.

Thanks,

Chuck.

Answer
there really is no normal life on motors. Its going to depend on how the bike was taken care of and how hard it was rode.
With that many miles and not knowing how they were maintained I would think that the bike would need a top end rebuild.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
