Motorcycle Repair: goldwing charging system, air fuel mixture, charging system

Question
Hi Mark,I recently purchased a 1978 goldwing. The charging system only puts out about 12.2 volts when running.I found out by accident that it will charge 14-15+ volts if the headlight is disconnected.I have replaced the battery and the regulater rectifier.I should also note that the voltmeter registers about 1 volt less my multi-meter.I replaced the voltmeter and still get the same results.I'm also fouling out the no.3 spark plug about every 50 miles,it gets black soot on it.I have also replaced the coils.Could all of these problems be connected?

Answer
Hi Mike,

Check the electrical connectors at the alternator leads and regulator/rectificer leads. Look for evidence of heat damage or corrosion.

Besides the alternator leads being rather small for the work, these connectors are prone to causing high resistance. It help to eliminate these connectors and solder the wires direct.

Visit www.electrosport.com and follow their "Fault Finding Chart" for charging system troubleshooting.

Ignition coils rarely fail. Causes of ignition problems usually is another source. Low charging voltage may affect ignition performance.

The plug fouling may be related to a faulty ignition, charging system, or air-fuel mixture tuning problems.

In ay case, avoid replacing parts prior to verifying parts are defective.
