Motorcycle Repair: Primary oil on drive chain., clutch assembly, excess oil

Question
I havean 86 super glide. Last year the drive got excess oil on it I believe it was from the primary. First question, should I have oil behind the primary cover and if so how hard of a fix would it be. I want to learn the bike myself. Thanks

Answer
there are two place you can get oil on the drive belt from. Either the main seal int he trans is leaking or the mainshaft seal going into the inner primary is leaking. Either way, you would have to remove the primary cover, clutch assembly, motor sprocket, starter, starter drive and inner primary to fix both.
If you are plannig on doing the job yourself then you ned to purchace a service manual. It will explain how to do the work
Good luck and happy riding
