Motorcycle Repair: belt drive 883 custom sportster, rear pulley, axle nut

Question
mike, i have got a 2005 883 custom sporty and the other day the drive belt broke. i was wondering if you could give me the correct procedure to replace it please.  thankyou steve

Answer
You will hae to jack the bike up so the rear wheel is off the ground. Loosen the belt adjusters and remove the axle. remove the pulley cover. Depending on what exhaut you have you might have to remove the rear exhaust. Slip the belt over the front pulley and the inbetween the rear pulley and axle and install on rear pulley. Install the axle and adjust the belt. You will need a special tool the check the flex on the belt. Once you have the belt adjusted tighten the axle nut to 60 FT/LBS
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
