Motorcycle Repair: Fork adjustment, suzuki ts250x, fork seals

Question
Hello - my son has a 1984 Suzuki TS250X which is used for dirt riding.  He says he bottoms out when going over jumps and wants to make the forks stiffer.  Can this be done - he has pulled them apart and found a heap of washers used for packing.

Thanks  Mick

Answer
Mick, the front forks on that machine work on oil. i would suspect the fork seals have gone a while back and has leaked out all the oil. my suggestion is to take the forks to a reputable shop for a rebuild and new seals. with no oil in them the spring alone is no where near strong enough to keep from bottoming.

oddly enough that machine was never sold in the states and i have never seen one in person. do you know how it got here ?
