Hi Mike, I'm having a problem with motorcycle exhaust. I'll first start off by saying I'm running a 113" S&S with Vance and Hines short shots. It's been dyno'd with the stock baffles in at 53 h.p. That cut it down way too much so the shop tuned it with no baffle at 102 h.p. Now my problem as you can guess is when I get on it on the highway the power will cut out. I've tried the power cones but they didn't help at all. So what I've done was put a 4" mini baffle in and have actually cut it down roughly 2 inches. This setup does work however if I do get on it again I notice the loss as it will break up in the higher r.p.m.s

So now what I'm wondering is 1) I've seen a lot of baffles such as the Khrome Werks HP baffles and wondered if they would make a difference. Or 2) I feel like you're going to tell me to get another pipe but I'm not sure which will work good. I like the fact that the Vance and Hines have the full heat shield so looks do actually matter to me as well.
Thanks for any advice...

I have a problem beleaving that you went from 53 HP to 102 HP just from removing the baffles. That is almost a 100% increase. When you say it breaks up at higher RPMS, what is the RPM your are refering to?
Mike

Well as far as the increase in horsepower that is what the shop was telling me it had on the dyno with the stock Vance baffles in. They cut them down to about 2 inches and they said that got it up to about 89 h.p. so at that time we decided to just leave them out.

Now as far as breaking up if you get on the throttle pretty hard, at the top end coming out of  the gear (it's hard to say the exact RPM as I'd be guessing since I don't have a tach) you can tell it's breaking up or sputtering until you shift. Whereas before with no baffles it would be clean the full way through the acceleration. Hope this helps... thanks.

Answer
It sounds like at the higher RPM's your bike is either leaning out or your pipes are not giving you enough back pressure. Many times the S&S carb has trouble working with certain pipes.
I think yoou best bet would be to call the tech support at S&S and they will be glad to help you. They can tell you what pipes wont work with their motor
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
