Motorcycle Repair: Electrical dropping out, honda vt1100, hi doug

Question
I have a 98 Honda VT1100 Spirit. The electrical is dropping out. It happened a few times while running... it would lose power and shut down. After a few seconds it started back up.
Now even when not running if you turn the key on it may or may not work. When it doesn't, there is nothing... no lights, not even the neutral or kickstand light.
Battery is new. All fuses are good. It intermittently comes and goes. I checked all the connections in the area under the seat... ok. When it is working I moved all the wires loooking for a short or something loose.
The problem never comes and goes while the switch is on... but only after turning the key off and then back on.

Answer
Hi Doug,

Sometimes when this occurs, a battery cable has become loosened. Check for a loose or otherwise defective battery connection.

Check all electrical connections that you can see and access for loose, corroded, or otherwise defective conditions.

Water shorting may be a source of the symptoms and can be very difficult to diagnose. Caused by rain and washing water getting into multi-connectors and shorting current.

The fix is to allow sufficinent time to air dry and apply dielectric grease to all connectors.

A defective CDI or ECM may cause a variety of symptoms. Have a local tech inspect this problem.
