Motorcycle Repair: 1976 Honda CB750F - Chain / Length question, 1976 honda cb750f, drive sprockets

Question
I just acquired a 1976 CB750F motorcycle. It was missing the chain, so I ended up buying a 530/100 chain, which I thought it was correct, but when I tried to put it on, it comes 1 (or 2) links too short. Can I get this extended? How do I figure out exactly the right size?

Answer
Hi Paul,

It's not wise to add links to a chain. One master link is bad enough.

You may be able to adjust chain adjusters to accomodate a bit of distance, but I suspect you'll need the proper length chain.

Verify the front and rear drive sprockets are stock.

Either count the number of points/teeth for each sprocket or read the stamped impression # of points on the sprocket's side.

Contact the local Honda dealer and inquire about stock final drive chain length and sprocket sizes. Let the parts person know what sizes you have. They will be able to compare and determine what you need.

If you cannot call a local Honda dealer, contact one of the major mail-order parts retailers such as Competition Accessories, Chaparral, or Dennis Kirk. Have them figure what you need. They have numerous catalogs in which to reference parts applications.

I return tech files by email. There was no email address with your question as requested and explained in my instructions.

Respectfully,
