Motorcycle Repair: gas mileage, honda cb750k, ft elevation

Question
I don't seem to be getting the kind of mileage I expected from my bike. I have an '80 Honda CB750K, and I'm riding mostly on the highway. It's fairly hilly and at about 6000 ft elevation. I'm usually around 6500 RPm at 80 mph. It's got new plugs, new air cleaner, plenty of power when accelerating, and the bike runs great, but I'm only getting around 30 - 35 mpg, which seems low to me. Am I wrong? If not, what can I do to improve efficiency?
Thanks,
Stu

Answer
Hi Stu,

30-35 mpg isn't bad, especially for an older, less efficient engine.

Inspect the needle jets for wear. They tend to wear out-of-round. Excessive fuel consumption and richer air-fuel mixtures are the result.

Consider changing the final drive gear ratio to lower engine rpm during highway cruising.

Consider lowering your cruising speeds. High speeds consumes more fuel.

I'll email MS-Excel gear reduction charts to you.

Always replace chain and both sprockets as a set. Old, worn parts quickly ruin new parts.
