Motorcycle Repair: 04 road king voltage regulator problem, harley davidson dealerships, harley davidson dealer

Question
I have a 2004 Road King classic. Bought by me, new, in Dec. 2003. At around 5000 miles the engine light came on while riding. It normally comes on when ignition is turned on, stays for a few seconds and goes off then I start the bike. But this came on while the bike was running. I took it to a harley davidson dealer and they replaced the voltage regulator. They said that the computer said that it was bad. OK at about 10,000 engine light comes back on while running just like before. Again took the bike to a different harley dealer. Guess what, voltage regulator. Well now at 17000 miles my engine light is back on. It is now in yet another harley shop. They are telling me its the voltage regulator. I had a ( I wont spell this right) kyuriken? brake light switch put on before the first problem started. The type of switch that makes the turn signal lights running lights, and brake lights as well. Also blinks three times when brakes are applied then goes solid. I had one dealer tell me that was the problem, and another say that that type of switch should not cause that type of problem. My question is what would cause me to go through voltage regulators, and why have two harley davidson dealerships not found out the problem instead of just replacing the regulator and sending me on my way.

Answer
You never said if they tested the stator. If you keep blowing regulators I would test the stator. It can be over charging and damaging the regulator. If you have an OHM meter and a AC volt meter you can do it yourself. If you need to know how let me know.
Good luck and happy riding
