Motorcycle Repair: Oil Spurt - 1982 Yamaha 650 Maxim, 1982 yamaha 650, fuel leak

Question
Hey Chris,

Seems you really know this bike and I've only had it a day, so any help will be well received.  Got it with tank off and battery dead.  Mounted tank and put a 10amp charger on the battery after checking the water level.  It drew 5amp's.  After fifteen minutes, gave it a try and it turned over for thirty seconds.  Repeating this process on the forth time she fired up and seemed smooth but, couldn't get it to ideal without a little throttle.  Any choke would also kill it.  So thought it best to spend an hour driving the battery to a good charge.  Started it again and prepared to head out, wanting to at least get it warm first, spent about two minutes just at a low rev in the driveway.  Rather suddenly realized an oil leak.  Seemed to be coming out of the breather hose at the Bottom (left) of what I assume is the air cleaner chamber and was dripping down the rear of the unit, down the outside of the same breather hose and coated the large boot for the shaft.  Guessing in thirty seconds maybe 4 oz. came out.  Couldn't keep it running and find the leak.  Got a pan and tried to restart it.  The battery wasn't showing any amps on the charger.  Let it charge a couple minutes, nothing, dim light not even enough to sound the horn.  Checked the charger, and connections.  Again nothing.  Tried turning it on with the charger attached.  Good light, horn worked.  When I hit the starter, got Click, click, click from the unit behind just rear of the battery but, would not turn over.  Also, when I hit the starter, tach went to 5000.  So... my questions are, did I fry the battery or something else with the charger and what might this oil leak be about.  Finally, there seems to be a minor fuel leak coming off the rear end of the no.2 carb.  Last Sept. when the bike was stored inside everything was working perfect and the unit has only 4K on it.

Thanks in advance,
Joe

Answer
Hi Joe.

It seems as if you may have a few problems here.

Let's start with the battery and charging system;
Let the battery charge overnight.  That should give it a full charge.  Test it with a hygrometer.  If that shows it to be bad, then replace it.  It should be okay, unless you let it discharge over the winter.

Once you have a good, fully charged battery on the bike then start it and let it idle.  See what the battery is charging at.  Your meter should be showing 14 - 16VDC at idle. If it is below that, then the stator is bad.  Another good indicator of charging would be the headlight getting brighter and dimmer as the idle goes up and down.

The problem with stalling.
When was the last time that you synchronized the carbs?  Are they due/overdue for synchronization?  Have they been cleaned properly?

The problem with the oil leak;
How clean is the air filter?  Is it due or overdue for replacement?
That leak is from the overflow tube.  Overflow normally occurs when there is a buildup of excess pressure in the crank case due either to overfilling of the oil or a leak from the pistons into the engine past the piston rings or through leaking valves and/or valve seals.
You may want to check them for damage and proper gap and timing.

The fuel leak;
Check the carbs from top to bottom.  You have bad seals and/or o-rings in the carbs.  A rebuild kit may be needed here.

Start with those and let me know what you find.
Good luck and ride safe.
