I have a 98' HD Sportster 883 Hugger. The problem started in January, I was riding in the cold weather and when I got up to about 40 mph, I shifted gear and as I rolled the throttle and it sort of bogged down and cut off as if I was low on gas. When I released the throttle, it ran fine. I did this a few times and got to a gas station thinking maybe I needed gas of had a frozen line somehow. I filled up and had the same thing happened.

I hadn't been on the highway until two weeks ago and it happened again. I tried some dry gas and octane booster, no help. I checked the spark plugs, there was some corrosion on the top of the plugs, I cleaned the plugs and the contacts on the plug wires. The bike sounded a lot better but now the problem is happening at 30 mph.

Is this a carb problem or a throttle adjustment or something else all together? I would really appreciate any help, thanks.

Pull your plugs and let me know what color they are

Okay Mike, I pulled the plugs out and they were clean. I cleaned them on Sunday, when I checked them out then, I was surprised to see that they was nothing remarkable about them. I started the bike and she started right up.

Answer
Couple of things to check.
Plug wires might be corroded. Check where they plug in to the coil.
Your intermediate jet in the carb might have a speck of dirt in it. You would have to pull the carb and remove the jet to check it.
Your electronic ignition might be breaking down.
Good luck and happy riding
