Motorcycle Repair: Low Power 86 Aspencade, old bikes, aspencade

Question
Christopher,

My brother was given an '86 Aspencade 1200 Gold Wing from his father in-law who got it from the original owner. It has low miles but was ditched one time off the road and not ridden since.
Now the bike has a problem with too little power.  Everything else seems to work fine. It starts right up and idles fine and everything works as it is supposed to. It simply does not have the power it should. Do these bikes have mechanical advancers on the ignition system somewhere? Do you have any idea where to get started looking?
I'm good with fixing old bikes and have drawn from answers you provided me before. Thanks.

R/ Bill

Answer
Hi Bill.

Here are the things to check/correct.  I hope you have the repair manual, because you will need it.

1) Clean carbs completely and thoroughly. Also clean or reseal the fuel tank to remove or seal out any residue from old/bad fuel.

2) Synchronize the carbs properly.

3) Check the valve timing and gap.

4) Check the ignition timing.

Let me know what you find.
Good luck and ride safe.
