Motorcycle Repair: 1982 Magna slips out of 1st gear, 1982 honda magna, transmission gears

Question
Rich-
I just bought a 1982 Honda Magna V45. Now I find that it jumps out of 1st gear into neutral. It only does that if I roll off of the throttle while in 1st gear. If I hold the gear shift lever down with my foot it stays in 1st gear. No problem with any gear except 1st. I just received my Clymer manual on the Magna but don't see troubleshooting for this problem. Called a couple of Honda dealers and they say worn dogs and/or shifting forks, up to $1000.00 to repair. What do you think?  Thank you for your response.

Answer
Yup, they are right.  Worn dogs on the transmission gears and a bent shift fork and probably a damaged shift drum too.  You're looking at $200-400 in used parts and a couple days of labor.  It's not a hard job if you want to tackle it youself.
