Motorcycle Repair: Engine dies, or sputters, when pulling throttle, kawasaki ninja zx, second hand bike

Question
Hey Chris
I have a kawasaki ninja ZX-9R, I just bought it and it was running fine for the 10 hours I had put on it. Now after it has warmed up, it will shut off, regardless if the choke is on or not. I have no problems starting it again, and when I give it some throttle it will usually die out. After doing this a few times it will work fine for awhile but then mid ride it will shut off again.
Thanks

Answer
Hi Scott.

If this is a brand new bike, then the dealership is responsible to fix the problem under the factory warranty.

If this is a second hand bike, then you may want to pull and clean the carbs, reseal the tank and make sure that the carbs are synchronized.

If the ZX-9 that you have is one of the race bikes that has a fuel pump, then you may want to check that as per the test proceedures in the repair manual.  There could also be issues with the fuel pump electrical (if you have a fuel pump on your model).

Whether you have a fuel pump or not, there could also be a blockage in the fuel line as well.

Start with those and let me know what you find.
Good luck and ride safe.
