Motorcycle Repair: how to take an ignition switch out of a 1980 honda cmt200, honda motorcycle, instrument light

Question
Hello Mark,

I had lost the keys to my 1980 200cmt honda motorcycle and a local dealer said the ignition switch could be removed without the wiring harness being cut and a set of keys can be made for me from the switch, my question is how can this switch be romoved without taking a lot of parts off the bike and detaching the wire from under the gas tank without complications?

Lisa.

Answer
Hi Lisa,

Sorry for the delay in replying.

If I remember correctly, with the round speedometer, remove the ignition switch by removing the speedometer assembly from the handlebars. Once off, remove the switch from the gauge assy. by unscrewing the locknut.

With the square speedo, remove the ignition switch by removing the instrument light and switch assy. and then remove the switch as above.

Respectfully,
