Motorcycle Repair: engine light, ecu module, rinehart true dual exhaust

Question
Hi,Mike.I own a 1996 flhtci with a 1998 ecu module.I added a Doherty Machine high flow air cleaner, power commander and a rinehart true dual exhaust. There is 33000 on the odometer. The battery is 5 years old and the battery gauge on the instrument panel points to a hair over 12 volts. The bike is fuel injected and has a stock engine otherwise.Lately I'm experiencing an intermittent problem. When I let go of the clutch to start rolling the engine shuts down occassionally, engine light comes on but no code registers.I know this because when i restart the bike the engine light does not blink any codes and the bike starts and runs fine. The bike runs fine at high rpms and highway riding. My question is this:Could it be the battery and how can I isolate my problem? Moreover is there anyway that I can retrieve my engine codes without a scanalyzer?I do that following a special sequence on my 1993 Buick where I trigger the light to blink the number of codes. Thanks a lot for your advice and your time.DOUCAS.

Answer
Witha  5 year old battery its probably about time to replace it. Test at the battery with a volt meter when the bike is running about 2000 RPM. You should be getting around 13.5 volts. If not then test the stator. It might be going bad.
As to the engine codes. Harley will only sell a scanlizer only to dealers. That way only dealers can read the codes. there are a few after market readers, but they are costly.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
