I have a 1987 honda elite scooter, with a 150 cc eng. When ever it sets for more then two weeks it is a beast to get started. This winter I drained the complete fuel system hoping this would help my spring starting problem. I just put the battery on the charger and added fresh gas. Still the same problem occures, the motor will fire and sputter a couple of times but it won't start and keep running. Any suggestions? Can I put a hand choke on this motor? Or put a larger low speed  jet in the motor?    THANKS for any help you can give me.    JERRY

Hi Jerry.        What would happen if I try burning ethanol in it? I burn ethonal in all the rest of my toys with no problems.

Start by cleaning the carb.

Since the bike, based on what you've described, sits for weeks at a time quite often, this problem will re-occur.
If your scooter is a 2-stroke (requires a 50:1 fuel:oil mix) 150, then there isn't much to do about it but runn the engine about once or twice a week whether you feel you need to or not.

If the scooter is a 4-stroke (straight gas, no oil mix) 150, then every 3rd tankful add a bottle of fuel treatment (with jetfuel).

Start there and see what you find.
Good luck and ride safe.

Answer
Hi Jerry.

Ethanol is not an effective solution for your problem.  Ethanol based fuel still leaves the same residue as petrolium distolated fuels.

Refer back to my previous response to your question.  Repair the problem first.  Then take the previously mentioned preventive actions.

Ride safe.
