Motorcycle Repair: 82 XT550 wont start hot, leak down test, cylinder compression

Question
I have this thumper that is getting up there. It usually takes
between 5-20 kicks to get it going, but lately, it is having a lot
of difficulty starting. It won't start when hot at all. I replaced to
starter coil and plug wire and this still happens. The battery is
new and charged. It seems that the electrical system is working
properly (lights, kill switch work). Could this be something as
simple as the spark plug is fouled or the idle is set too low?
When it gets started (after sitting for a few days) it sounds like
the engine is running well, but I have noticed sometimes when I
open the throttle, there is hesitation.

Anyway, what do you think? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Jeremy,

From the limited information provided, I suspect a carburetor tuning problem exists. Maybe other problems, too. It's difficult to accurately diagnose a problem without being present and performing a few checks.

Check cylinder compression and follow with a leak-down test if necessary. These tests will determine the condition of the engine. A leak-down will help locate the source of the worn or defective parts.

Learn about reading the appearance of the spark plug. Visit www.ngk.com and navigate about the site to learn more.

Check valve clearances and adjust if necessary. Same with decompression valve if applicable.

Perform a tune-up or have it done by a shop.

Inspect and thoroughly clean the carburetor.

If the problem persists, have a local shop inspect it for you. Get a copy of the service manual and learn about repairing, troubleshooting, and maintaining your MC yourself.

Respectfully,
