Motorcycle Repair: CB 750 broken speedometer, honda nighthawk 750, bike bandit

Question
I own a 2000 Honda Nighthawk 750. While riding one day the
speedometer stopped working for no reason in particular. The
cable didn't catch on anthing or come loose. The problem seems
like it could be easy enough to fix as I noticed there is one cable
leading down to the axle of the front wheel. What is the best way
to go about trouble shooting this problem? How would I go
about isolating the problem so I know what part to fix or buy? Is
this a really complicated area of the bike that should be left up
to a dealer? I've had a few problems in the past and some
experience working on the bike so if all it takes is a few turns of
a wrench I'd like to deal with it myself.

Thanks for the help,

Matt

Answer
Hi Matt,

The best advice I can give you is get a copy of the service manual. Pay a few extra dollars and buy Honda's manual. Other brands seem to lack clarity.

The speedo cable can be removed with pliers. Follow the cable up to the rear of the speedometer and remove the cable housing nut.

Follow the cable down to the front wheel and remove the cable housing nut.

Remove the cable and cable housing from the frame. Pull the cable out from the cable housing and inspect the cabe for defects. The cable ends usually become rusty and break.

Get a new cable from Bike Bandit "www.bikebandit.com" for about $21 plus shipping.
