Motorcycle Repair: Monoshock, yamaha yz 250, old bikes

Question
I own a 1982 Yamaha YZ 250 J. I am having trouble with my monoshock. It is blown, not rebuildable, and new is not available. Any shocks I have seen are in as bad shape as mine or worse. My questions are where do I find technical specs for this shock I cant even find out the manufacturer of the original.I have tried everything I can think of. I may be able to have one custom made if I had this info.My other question is there any other type of shock I could make fit I have access to welders etc an dhave the ability to retro something. I just need to pick somthing compatible to start with before I start cutting and hacking. This bike is just a fun machine I am 38 I would like to make it work as good as possible but it doesnt get raced. I just like the old bikes and want to keep this one alive. If you can help in any way I would be very gratful Thank You Ian

Answer
Hi Ian.

well, to start with, the tech specs for the shock should be in the factory repair manual.  Any other repair manual other than the factory one might not have it.

Also, you can look online at the following sites:

www.jcwhitney.com
www.denniskirk.com
www.shadetreepowersports.com
www.compcyclecenter.com

At least one of these places should be able to get you an aftermarket replacement for your shock.

Good luck and ride safe.
