Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha V Star 1100, yamaha v star, straight pipes

Question
Hi Chris,

  I have a 2 fold question. I bought a wrecked 2002 Yamaha V star 1100 that I just finished repairing. The bike had aftermarket straight pipes that I replaced with OEM pipes. To get it running I had to clean the carbs and it seems to be running rich. (Carbon on spark plugs after 30 miles.)

1) PMS on both Carbs was set at 2.5 turns out (rich side). Would 1.5 turns out be close to factory setting?

2) In the air intake duct between the air cleaner and the rear carb was a small amount of gas. Could Carburator flooding or float sticking cause this?

thks much

Answer
Hi Ray.

As far as the carb settings are concerned, there are 2 options;

1) Adjust (both carbs the same), ride, check, adjust - til it runs clean and right.

2) Replace the carbs with new ones that are set at the factory.

As far as what the actual factory settings are, I do not know.  Not too sure that many people do know.

As far as the fuel in the airbox, that could be relaed to the carbs running rich or, more likely, the floats and/or float seals are bad or the floats are sticking.

Let me know what happens and good luck.

Ride safe.
