Motorcycle Repair: firing problem, car alarms, happends

Question
Hi Mike,
read the other problem that the person had with is harley and i think it could be the same.
Just need a bit of help with my 12/92 Harley heritage soft tail with electronic spark with carb, standard type.

Just lately it has started missing at certain speeds 4 gear between 80 and 84 Km and 5 gear between 102 and 110 Km a bit one Cyl then 2, just can't work out what it could be. Also some time in lower gear but don't have speeds on these. Would you have any idea what I should look at? I did take the last baffle out of No1 cylinder the same as No2 as it was making a noise.(great sound!)Also a wile back it lost a bit of it's top end, don't know the rev's but when it does it when i rev it all the way out it miss fires badly in the pipes sending flames ouit the pipes when i am on the throttle then i need to stop turn off the bike and restart then it is all ok again this only happends when i give the bike a hard time as you do some times.New rings were put in about 30,000 Km's ago heads were not as they looked and tested OK Bike has done a bit about 200,000 Km's, but love it! (ride all the time can't stop)

Like to hear for you as I am at wits end to fix the problem.
Thanks!
Dave
PS about 6 month ago it did back fire when i reved it up and then let it off now it has stoped doing it (bugger no more car alarms going off)

Answer
You never said if you rejetted the carb when you removed the baffles, but I woould suspect that that is your problem. removing the baffles made the bike run lean, so it needs to be richened up. The flames out of the pipes is probably from no back pressure in the exhaust system. Removing the baffles has hurt your  midrange performance. You would be better off installing a exhaust system that has the sound you are looking for, which in turn will bring the performance back up.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
