Motorcycle Repair: 1986 Kawasaki Ninja 1000, kawasaki ninja, brake hoses

Question
My brother has the 1986 Ninja 1000 and it's been sitting in his backyard for about 7 years.
I like to get running again.

What steps would you suggest to get the bike back to working order?
I didn't just want to drop it off at a shop right away.

Thanks.

Answer
Hi Allen,

Inspect the fuel tank interior for evidence of rust. I recomend a product named: "Red-Kote" for sealing fuel tanks. Much better product than Kreem sealer.

The carburetors will need thoroughly cleaned. Carb parts may need replaced.

The fuel petcock may need thoroughly cleaned or replaced.

Engine oil and oil filter needs to be replaced.

Cylinder compression should be checked before any other work is performed. Hopefully, rings and bearings have not rusted to their mating parts.

Brake hoses, tires, and other rubber parts should be replaced.

Flush cooling system and add new coolant. Use a tool such as MityVac's AirEvac tool to purge air from the system. Mandatory procedure.

Adjust valve clearances and synchronize carbs.

Flush and bleed brake system.

Lube and adjust chain.

Lube cables.

Install new battery.

Get a copy of the service manual.
