Motorcycle Repair: Petcock issue, pingel petcock, sampson exhaust

Question
I have a 95 RoadKing with K&N filter, Sampson exhaust and a Pingel petcock. Several months ago it started leaking while parked in the off position, but not leaking in the on position. It runs fine, but lately I've smelled gas, and seem to be getting very low gas mileage. Is it possible there is still a leak into the carb and engine? I suspect it should be replaced. I have basic mechanical tools & skills.

1) Are these symptoms consistent with a petcock leak?
2) Is a replacement simple enough repair to attempt myself?

I appreciate your help.

Answer
Smell your oil. You might be loosing the gas into the oil system of the bike. If you are change your oil so the bearings dont get washed.
To change the petcock is pretty cut and dry. Drain all the gas from the tank. Use a wrench and remove the old petcock. Do the reverse for installing. Make sure you use some teflon tape on the threads of the tank so you dont have a leak.
Good luck and happy riding
