Motorcycle Repair: Electrical problem, honda shadow, old battery

Question
I am riding a 1985 Honda Shadow, VT700C, recently I began having problems with maintaining a charge. I've checked connections and wiring, replaced "old" battery.  I have to charge the battery with an external charger after riding aprox. 100 miles, due to voltage too low to start.  How can I determine if the problem is the stator or rectifier?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated before I start just random parts replacement.

Answer
Hi Berry,

Testing the output of the alternator and testing charging system components is easy.

You'll need to obtain a copy of the service manual for the procedures and specifications.

You'll need a multimeter (volt ohm meter or VOM) to perform the tests.

If you have difficulty understanding the test procedures or using the meter, use AllExperts for assistance.
