Motorcycle Repair: Stator replacement, yamaha service manual, stator coil

Question
I have a 1987 XV700 that isn't charging the battery. I have done a check on the stator it gives a ohm reading of .8 the book says it should be .5 do I need to replace it, and how do I get to the stator coil. Do I have to drain the oil? Is it on the right side or left. The manual I have doesn't show anything. What steps do I need to do to replace it?

Answer
Hi Dave,

There was no history of repairs or symptoms of the problem in the question.

With respect to test meter (VOM) variations and other variables, I suspect the readings obstained are acceptable.

Try performing an output test to verify the charging output is within service limits. Repair or replace defective parts only after verifying such parts are defective.

For more help, visit "www.eletrexusa.com" and follow their Troubleshooting Chart. I recommend their replacement parts over OEM parts.

I recommend you obtain a copy of the Yamaha Service Manual. It's more expensive than Clymer or Haynes manuals, but we get what we pay for. I think you've experienced what I mean by lack of information.

The answers to your questions can be found in either of the copy-cat manuals. You'll need to read more thoroughly, respectfully.

I return test and repair information files by email. There was no email address with your question as requested in my instructions.

Respectfully,
