Motorcycle Repair: Battery and starting, honda shadow 1100, regulator rectifier

Question
I bought a new battery almost 3 weeks ago, and the day before yesterday, I had to push start the bike because it wouldn't turn over. It tried to crank, then slowed down (the crank), then clicked a few times then stopped completely. The headlight goes dark as it won't start. Is this an issue with my battery, or do I need to check the starter ot cylinoid (if a 1992 Honda Shadow 1100 has one)? I am taking the battery back to have it checked, but I'd like to know if it's an issue that will happen again if I don't correct another problem.

Answer
Hi James,

It is possible to receive a defective new battery. Test the battery to verify it's condition.

The Shadow may have a problem with the charging system. For example, if a battery leads is corroded or loose, current may not flow back to the battery to recharge it.

The regulator/rectifier may be defective. This converts AC to DC and maintains proper voltage for the system and is part of the charging system.

Test all components of the charging system. Perform an output test to determine if the alternator is working properly. Visit "www.electrexusa.com" and check out their Troubleshooting Chart.

Buy the service manual and follow the test procedures.
