Motorcycle Repair: 74 Trail 70, bill silver, ground path

Question
My turn signals will not blink they will turn on but will blink slowly and only at high RPM. The battery is charged, the rest of my lights work, the headlite works but is dim until you throttle up.

Thanks Again.

Answer
Steve, the headlight runs off the lighting coil in the magneto, so it subject to needing more rpms to get more juice to the light.

Turnsignals and brake light are dependent on a fully- charged battery, as primary source, then as the engine is gaining rpms the charging system kicks in to maintain the current required to operate the flasher.

If all lights come on, but don't blink, then you have to check the power going into and out of the flasher.. should be close to battery voltage. Power flow goes from Battery, through the ignition switch to the flasher. Power out of the flasher goes to the handlebar switch, then out to either left or right side lighting. If you have power going into each lamp assembly, check all bulbs for correct rating and ensure that the ground path from the bulb socket to the chassis or harness is clean and tight.

Check the charging system output with lights on and off. If the battery isn't being charged, either you have loose wire connectors, low output from the lighting and charging coils in the magneto or a failed rectifier.
