Motorcycle Repair: honda with ultra low miles, moist climate, honda rebel

Question
Bill, I have the chance to buy a 2003 Honda rebel with fewer than
100 miles -- are there problems associated with a bike sitting idle
for a long time?
Thanks

Answer
Clint, I would change the oil, but most concerns are with the fuel system. Gas goes stale and congeals when sitting for more than a few months. This could entail draining and cleaning the whole fuel system, plus a carb cleanout to be sure that the jets are not plugged with fuel deposits. Could cost a couple of hundred dollars to get it all back on its feet again.

You may need to replace the battery, as well. They only work well for a couple of years.  Lubricate the drive chain and adjust as necessary. If the bike was in a moist climate, there may be some rust buildup inside the brake drum at the back.
