Motorcycle Repair: 1980 Honda CB650 Rotor Removal, 1980 honda cb650, flange bolt

Question
Hi Bill, I'll be glad of any advice in removing the alternator rotor from crankshaft of my 1980 CB650.

Per the manual, I tried holding the crankshaft stationary with a wrench on the "engine turning hexagon." The dowel pin locating the ignition pick up on the crankshaft sheared and the rotor flange bolt did not release!

I've tried putting the  bike in gear & applying the rear brake. As I turn the wrench on the rotor flanged  bolt (into the crankshaft) there seems to be a lot of "wind up" along the drive train but the bolt does not unscrew. I can't get enough torque on it. I really don't want to take the engine apart to hold the crankshaft internally.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your time

Tony

Answer
Tony, you really have to do this with air tools. The rotor bolts are often set with locktite or just get rusted in place. Once you get the bolt out, you MUST use the correct rotor removal tool to thread into the hole. Again, you may have to use air tools to apply enough juice to get the rotor off the end of the crankshaft. In some cases, you may have to tighten the tool as much as possible, then smack the end of it with a hammer to help jar it off the end of the crankshaft. Do that only as a last resort, as too much thrust on the end of the crankshaft may damage the main bearings.

Take it to a shop that has a good compressor and air ratchet or air gun with enough grunt to get the parts apart!
