Motorcycle Repair: Clutch Adjustment on 76 Sportster, clutch adjustment, clutch pack

Question
Hello,
I have a 76 Shovelhead that I have had a lot of trouble getting the clutch adjusted on.  I have had a whole new clutch pack installed as well as new cable and the rocker that the clutch cable attaches to inside the primary.  The problem is that the clutch keeps "loosening" up on me.  The adjusting bolt going in to the primary is not moving, as it is new too, but when I go to "tighten" it up, I hear a frightening popping noise from inside the primary.  I have had it to a mechanic 3 times now for this and its no better now than the day I got it, but my wallet is MUCH lighter.  Any suggestions?  I have heard that the clutches during the AMC years were just junk to begin with, but I at least want to be able to ride it.  In order not to hear that popping noise everytime i pull the clutch lever, I have to back it off to the point that the clutch isn't fully engaging wich creates a problem at stop signs and lights.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Try this. Sounds like your rocker is ingaged when you try to adjust the clutch.
First, loosen the cable all the way (make it shorter). Now, loosen the adjuster screw on the clutch, so there is no pressure on the clutch at all. Now, push on the cable, so that it slides inward as far as it will go. That will take the engagement off the slider. Now adjust the clutch screw. Turn it inward, just until it touches and back out just a hair. Now adjust your cable until you have about 1/8 inch play in the clutch lever. Now you should be set.
Good luck and happy riding
