i have a custom built harley with a shovel head. bike is set up with kick and electric start. bike starts fine using the electric start, but when kickstarting i have a real nightmare.kick for a good 20 minutes to get the thing started, cold or hot, doesn't even spit or sputter then all of a sudden it will decide to start. when it does start it runs fine.at this time kicking is my only option as the starter is shot and i cant afford to replace it as of now. why is this thing so hard to start while kicking?

A couple of questions, are you running points or electronics? What carb are you running?
Mike   sorry.. im running points which are new set at .18 and an s&s super carb.

Heres is how I always start a bike with a kickstarter and it sees to work for me.
Leave the ignition off. Give the throttle a couple of twists. Open the choke if the motor is cold. Kick the bike through a couple of times. Now turn the ignition on and kick it.
If this doesnt work let me know.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike  that is exactly the way i always try to start the old girl, but still nothing.

Answer
Ok, well there are several things you can do to make sure its going to start. First, make sure the timing is right on or maybe a little retarted. Next, make sure the points are set right on and you have a good condenser. Since you said is doesnt spit and sputter you might be giving to much gas and flooding the motor. Try less gas before starting.
Good luck and happy riding
