Motorcycle Repair: no power to the coil, starter motor, shively

Question
I have a 1979 honda cm400t I had it running the the other day i went out to start and nothing so i checked the spark plugs a found out there is no spark so I checked to see if there is power to the coil and there is not  I have to kick start the motor because the starter motor is shot.is there something i might be able to do to make sure that there is power to the coil.

Answer
Hi Jason,

Please describe the manner in which power to the coils was tested. Can you provide a bit of history on this motorcycle? Is it just coming out of a long period of storage? Has it been ridden daily since 1979 and suddenly stopped running? What work has been done to make it run?

The more I know about the MC, the better I can help you. The accuracy of my internet diagnosis depends upon the descrpition I recieve to work with.
