Motorcycle Repair: valve adj. and cam chain adj, tdc mark, cb400t

Question
Hi Bill,
I just need the valve clearance for an '82 Honda 450SC Nighthawk.  Also the procedure for tightening the cam chain and location of adj nut.  I know how to do it on my CB400T, but the Nighthawk looks a bit different.  Thanks

Answer
.004" on the intakes and .0055 (tight 5 or loose 6 thou of an inch) on the exhaust.
I wasn't aware that they had made major departures on the camchain tension from the 400 to the 450 versions. Checked my online source of microfiches:

Illustrations seem to show two fasteners on the back of the cylinder. Top bolt is a holder and needs to be backed off about 1 turn, I guess. Below that is a nut/washer. Loosen the nut when the pistons are on the TDC mark and it should take care of it. If in doubt, remove the valve cover and watch the camchain for slack and adjust accordingly. The tensioner is spring loaded, so will spring into correct position as long as no valves are open trying to push the cam forward, which takes the slack out of the back side of the chain.
