Motorcycle Repair: Honda Nighthawk Tachometer, honda nighthawk, check ebay

Question
Hi. Two years ago when I put my 1984 Nighthawk 650 away for the winter I was letting it run with the choke on to get the Stabil through the carbs (I think). Something drew my attention away from the bike and when I returned it was idling real high. I can't remember at what RPM it was idling at, probably like 5 or 6 thousand. But since then the tachometer doesn't work. I checked all the fuses that I can see and all are still good. Is there a hidden fuse somewhere for the tach or is it going to be deeper than that? Thanks for your help, Rob.

Answer
Rob, the online microfiche services show that the whole instrument cluster comes apart and has separate serviceable parts. The tachometer unit could be sticky from sitting for a long time. I think that the coils are the "sending unit" for the tachometer impulses, so check around the coil set for an extra wire that may go to the tachometer.
I doubt that there is a fuse for the the tachometer unit.
Although it is over 20 years old, it is still too new for me to maintain a lot of data for. Try to find a shop manual with a wiring diagram so you can trace the power pulses to the tachometer. Check Ebay or the web for the Nighthawk owner's website.
