Motorcycle Repair: modify kaw. zx9r, rear sprocket, drive sprocket

Question
Mark, I have a 00" kaw. zx9r,I put on a vance & hines slip-on exhaust, and went up two teeth on the rear sprocket, I was told I could pull a wheelie, with these mods., just by rolling the throttle on hard, Ive seen yamaha600's, do this with less horsepower, but no luck with my 900, should I go up more on the rear sprocket, and change the front sprocket as well, what else can I do? I really need your professional advice Mark, thank you.

Answer
Hi Ray,

Final drive sprocket ratio is:  3:1

In other words, make sprocket changes in incriments of 3 points on the rear, and 1 point on the front. Changing incriments other than 3 points at a time rear is not really making effective change. You'll have to try different sprockets to learn what gear ratio provides the results you want.

The Yamaha's have different ratio's, power to weight characteristics, and power bands.
