Motorcycle Repair: Front Fork Seals, honda xr250r, damper rod

Question
I have a 1988 Honda XR250R with leaking front forks.  I have purchased the replacement seals and I am currently at the stage where I need to remove the lower Allen bolt in order to freeup the damper rod (working via shop manual).  To my surprise, the forks have a damping screw at the bottom instead.  How do I proceed?  Do I need a special tool?  I am assuming I need to remove the fork tube to replace the seal (which means removing the damper rod).

Thanks!
Rob.

Log in here and you can see the exploded view. I really don't do a lot of dirt bike stuff, but the illusrations look fairly normal. It appears that the bottom damper valve still has to come out, but if not, perhaps it is just to center the damper rod and the whole top cap/spring assy keeps the damper rod in place.

I couldn't find any other really good detailed info. You do know that you generally have to have some kind of tool to hold the damper rod steady when removing the lower bolt/valve, so plan on creating or buying something appropriate. Perhaps, your local Honda dealer is willing to let you see some shop manual details...
