Motorcycle Repair: tranny problem?, clutch baskets, drive pulley

Question
Mike,
I have a 92 Dyna and recently when shifting from 2to3, Something 'let go' in the driveline. I will not go into gear, just revs. I took the primaries and clutch baskets off.  It looks like the the drive pulley is spinning freely. Which is weaker, the splined teeth on the mainshaft or the splines in the pulley.I haven't taken the pulley off yet because I don't have the tool. Is there another way of getting the nut off besides buying the HD tool. Any thoughts.
Thanks,
Dennis

Answer
That is about the only way to get the nut off. The shaft is harder than the pully, but because of the hardness is will chip easier. I would remove the pully and check the shaft. If that is not the problem then you might have a bent shifter fork, or a bearing that has gone out inside the trans.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
