Question -
I would like to know if a 56' panhead ridgid frame would be suitable for restoring a 53' bike now on a softtail frame?
Answer -
I am not sure what you mean by suitable. If you are looking for a bike to ride short distances, then go with the hardtail. I am not sure if you have ever road a hardtail, but they are pretty rough. Also, if you hit a pothole at high speeds you can throw the bike sideways.
Is this what youa re looking for?

Mike,  I am interested In restoring the bike  to it's original frame.

Answer
There is a slight difference between the 56 and the 53 frame, but it would not be noticeable. There would be no problem with setting it all up. If you are looking for a true restoration however, I would see if I could find a 53 frame. There is a company called V-twin that makes reproduction frames from that era.
Good luck with your project
Mike
