Motorcycle Repair: gas starved, harley dealer, winamac

Question
I own a 2001 electra glide classic carb equipped. The bike has 62k miles. different pipes and jetting is the only modifacation done when new. Recently on two seperate long rides at expressway speeds, the bike seemed to starve for gas all of a sudden and quit. One time I was able to restart after a cool down, the second trip a harley dealer in Winamac Ind. towed me in and replaced the gas petock with a new and improved version. No more problems for approx.3000 miles. Now the problem has reacured, but with one exception. The motor just quites without that running out of gas sputter. All electrical accessories aren't effected, and I've been able to restart. I may go hundreds of miles before it occurs again. I do ride in adverse conditions at times. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer
There can be several reasons for this problem.
First, your gas cap might not be venting causing a vaccumn.
Second, the ignition might be going out.
And third, the coil is breaking down when it gets hot.
The next time you go riding, take a spark plug wrench whith you. WHen it stops, remove the plug, put it back int he plug wire and while turning the bike over, touch it to the cylinder. Are you getting spark? IF not, then its either a bad ignition or coil.
If it its then it might be the gas cap.
Good luck and happy riding
