Motorcycle Repair: Getting an 83 Yamaha Venture running, yamaha venture, automotive mechanics

Question
Chris,
I recently recieved an 83 Yamaha Venture.  The bike has been sitting for about 4 years but has been a garage kept bike.  As far as I know the bike was pretty well maintained.  My question is is there anything you would recommend I do before I try and get this bike running.  By that, I mean, pulling out the gas tank and having it cleaned, pulling the carbs and cleaning them and chaning fluids.  It is a 1200cc with quad carbs.  My backround is in cars not bikes and just curious if there is anything I should be aware of.  Any advice would be greatly apprieciated.  Thanks.

Answer
Hi David.
Your instincts, so far, are leading you in the right direction.

You will want to reseal the tank, pull and clean the carbs and change all of the fluids.

In addition, you also should replace the battery, if you haven't already done so, as well as the spark plugs and oil and air filters and check the tires.  If they are cracked, then replace them as the cracks are dry rot and that isn't safe.

Get the repair manual for the bike.  Having practical training and experience in automotive mechanics, you already have the basics, now you just need to familiarize yourself with the specifics for your bike as well as bikes in general.

Good luck.
