Motorcycle Repair: Problem with one of 2 cylnders firing, varnish, carbs

Question
Hi. I just bought a 1983 Honda 450E custom, and it has 1452 kms on it. (It's brand new!) I cleaned out and rebuilt the carbs with new carb kits and got all the varnish out. It had been sitting for the last 17 years. The slave carb and piston is firing and the exhaust is very hot on that side but the main carb and piston don't seem to be firing, cause the exhasts stays pretty cool. There is spark and compression. Could this just be a setting of the carb problem, or could it be something else? Thanks!

Answer
JR,You will have to balance the carbs. to get them to hit on both.Try balancing them with one plug wire on at a time ,adjust the opset carb.to the plug wire you have off, adjust so engine will just die off idle. Then visa-versa the other side. Then put the wires back on and adjust a 1/4 turn at a time till the cylinders both hit. This is a way if you don't have a lot of tools to work with. Good luck .Try me again. Glen
